HU HONUA
CERAMICS by Barbara Thompson
Hand-made pottery from the North Shore of O'ahu, Hawai'i
ABOUT
HŪ HONUA is a Hawaiian phrase meaning "to come out of the earth," like a spring that flows up and outward from unknown depths and distant places. Hū has many meanings in Hawaiian: to rise, swell, percolate, surge, overflow, unite, and join; while honua means land, earth, and world.
Spoken together, the phrase beautifully captures the serendipitous nature of my clay vessels, which reflect deep seated memories and love of my birthplace on O'ahu as well as impressions left on my psyche by decades of traveling and studying arts and cultures from around the world.
